We're Sammy's Brezels — a small family business bringing a little slice of Germany to North Canterbury.
In Germany, a proper Brezel isn't just a pretzel shape. It's a Laugenbrezel — dipped in lye (Natronlauge) before baking, which gives it that deep brown colour, the satisfying chew, and a flavour you genuinely can't replicate any other way. It's what every bakery in Europe does. It's also something you'll struggle to find anywhere in New Zealand.
Until now.
We bake in small batches, to order, using traditional German methods. No shortcuts, no industrial processes. When you order a Brezel from us, someone actually makes it — for you.
We're based in the Waimakariri district, and we deliver across the region. You can also find us on Saturdays at three markets — the Amberley Farmers Market and the Christchurch Farmers' Market at Riccarton House in the morning, and The Seekers Mākete at The Arts Centre through the middle of the day. We love having a chat with our regulars and newcomers alike.
Why Brezels, not Pretzels? Because that's what they're called in German — and we're proud of where they come from.
On Saturdays we're stall holders at three markets — come say hello, no pre-order needed on the day.
Three ways to get your Brezels — and a fourth if none of these suit you.
Brezels make every occasion better — from a Friday morning tea to a kids' birthday party or a community festival.
Treat your team to fresh Brezels delivered straight to the office or site. A talking point, not just a snack. Vegetarian and vegan options always available.
Half-time pretzels, match-day snacks, club canteen orders. Brezels are portable, crowd-pleasing, and something your supporters will actually remember.
School galas, fairs, markets, fundraisers, birthdays and kids' birthday parties. We can supply in bulk for your event — get in touch and let's make it work.
Morning teas, board meetings, client events. Authentic German Brezels are an unexpected, memorable choice that stands out from the usual platter.
The warm, fresh-baked scent of a Brezel fills a house like nothing else — and buyers remember it. We supply open homes across Waimakariri (minimum 10 Brezels, delivered to site).

Reviews from real Brezel fans
Google Review“Best Pretzels I've had in Canterbury and I've tried my fair share.
Flavours are classic with no frills. Just clean and well done.
The consistency of the pretzel is perfect. Not too bready or dense, but has good resistance on the outside skin for a satisfying chew.
Definitely worth a stop if going through Amberley or checking out at whatever markets they pop up at.”
Google Review“These Brezels are my 'go to' snack every Saturday! Sammy does a fantastic brezel, so fresh and tasty. I love my brezels warmed in the air fryer, and have recently discovered the new flavours and toppings. Highly recommend!”

A Brezel, or Laugenbrezel, is the traditional German soft pretzel: hand-rolled dough dipped in food-grade lye before baking, which gives it its deep mahogany crust and distinctive flavour. It is chewy and golden outside, soft and fluffy inside, and finished with coarse pretzel salt. We bake ours fresh to order.
