Heading north instead? The Amberley Farmers Market runs Saturday mornings, 9am to 12:30pm — our third market.

What to try first

If you grew up with these, you already know. If you did not, start with the Original.

The Original Brezel

The real thing — hand-rolled, lye-dipped, salted, baked that morning. Dark shiny crust, soft chewy middle. There is a vegan version at the same price.

Filled pretzel sticks

Laugenstange split and filled — NUTELLA®, Biscoff® or parmesan if you would rather go savoury.

Pretzel dogs

A proper sausage wrapped in lye dough and baked. The one that disappears fastest at the stall, and the reason to pre-order.

Vegan options

Vegan versions of the Original Brezel, the Sweet Brezel and the Biscoff® stick — same recipe discipline, no compromise.

Christchurch questions

Which market, pre-ordering, catering and parking.

Where can I buy German pretzels in Christchurch?

At two Saturday markets. The Christchurch Farmers Market at Riccarton House, 16 Kahu Road, from 9am to 12pm; and The Seekers Makete, Market Square at The Arts Centre, 2 Worcester Boulevard, from 10am to 3pm. We bake that morning in Rangiora and bring them straight in.

Can I order ahead so you do not sell out?

Yes, and it is worth doing. Order online by Friday 12pm, choose whichever market suits you as your collection point, and your box will be set aside with your name on it. Popular lines do run out on the day.

Are you at both markets every Saturday?

Usually, but not always — some weeks a market does not run, or we are booked at an event instead. The What's On calendar shows exactly where we will be, and anything not running is marked before you order.

Do you deliver to Christchurch homes?

Not at the moment. Home delivery covers Rangiora, Kaiapoi and the Waimakariri only. In the city you can collect from either Saturday market, or book catering delivered to a workplace, venue or event.

Do you cater in Christchurch?

Yes. Catering is delivered into Christchurch — offices, functions, weddings, wakes and community events. From $5 per Brezel with a minimum of 10 and 48 hours notice.

What is a Brezel?

A German soft pretzel (Laugenbrezel) — hand-rolled, dipped in a lye solution before baking, which is what gives it the dark shiny crust and the soft chewy inside. It is a completely different thing from a hard packet pretzel.

Is there parking at either market?

Riccarton House has parking on site off Kahu Road, with more along Riccarton Road and Kahu Road itself. At The Arts Centre there is paid parking around the site and along Worcester Boulevard, an easy walk from the Botanic Gardens and the central city.

See you Saturday
